Coffee production was introduced to New Guinea in 1926. Today 280,000 small growers cultivate less than 1 hectare (2.5 acres); some as few as 30 coffee trees. Although small geographically, New Guinea is characterized by a rugged mountainous terrain. Even today there are vast unexplored areas and indigenous people without Western contact. There are over 850 documented indigenous languages some as linguistically distinct as English and Chinese. The largest language by far is Tok Pisin (“Talk Business”) a Creole blend of native languages and English. Fewer than 3% of the population speak English.
